Thato is one of our lucky winners who shared her inspiring Nissan story at NAMPO Bothaville. Her heartfelt testimonial revealed how one of the vehicles on display made a meaningful difference in her life, proving that every journey has a story worth celebrating.

“My story with Nissan didn’t start with me driving or owning one but started with my oupa. Before I was born, when my dad and grandpa started farming, he bought his first Nissan, a 1992 Hardbody. Then came not one, but two “pannetjies” a 1200 and later a bright red 1400 from 1981. That’s where our story began…

Then came what we named “The geelbakkie, a 1997 model that he bought in 1998. And today, it’s still a running part of our family. That alone says everything about what the brand means to us.

As time went on, my grandpa sold the 1200 and 1400, then him and my father bought a Hardbody 3.0L V6. That’s the bakkie I grew up in, doing 4x4 routes, going camping, and building memories which have stayed with me.

But my dad had a dream, he wanted a Patrol and made a promise to himself that he would trade in the hardbody when he could afford to upgrade to Patrol. So, when I was in Grade R, we flew to Johannesburg, and that’s when the dream becomes a reality and bought his first Patrol. That’s when Nissan became more than just a vehicle brand to us but a part of who we are.

First came a 2003 4.8 Automatic Patrol, “Witblits”. Later, a 2010 V8 Patrol with a 6.2L engine.

Growing up we would attend rallies where Nissan competed. In 2006 my dad took me to watch a race in Darling, and I still remember standing next to one of the race bakkie Elfie Cox’s to be exact completely excited and shy at the same time. That same feeling came back when I saw another race bakkie at NAMPO. I had to take a photo 20 years later.

So I didn’t grow up choosing Nissan, I grew up in it and for that I’m grateful. From the rear seat to eventually understanding what these vehicles are capable of. Nissan became more than transport, it shaped how I see reliability, capability, and trust.
Today, that story continues with me. I own a 1995 Nissan GQ Patrol.”
